Frequently Asked Questions

What is Contemplative Education and how can it help me?

Contemplative Education is a process of learning to think clearly and make healthier decisions by becoming aware of the patterns—often rooted in childhood experiences or trauma—that shape how you think, feel, and respond to life. Instead of trying to silence the mind, as in some forms of meditation, contemplation invites you to engage with your thoughts, understand their origins, and transform unhelpful habits into ones that support emotional balance and well-being. Whether you’re seeking personal growth, emotional healing, or better relationships, Contemplative Education can help you develop the clarity, compassion, and tools you need to move forward.

How is your work different from traditional therapy or counseling?

While I am not a licensed therapist, my work as a Human Development Educator and Spiritual Care Provider complements many of the goals of therapy. My approach combines practical conflict-resolution strategies, reflective dialogue, and the principles of contemplative education to help you understand the root causes of your challenges. I focus on identifying emotional patterns, improving communication, and fostering healthier relationships—with yourself and with others. This can be especially valuable for individuals, couples, families, and even teams or organizations looking for lasting transformation.

Do you offer couples or family therapy in Portland, Maine or online?

Yes. I offer couples and family consultations both in person in Portland, Maine, and virtually for clients across the country or internationally. These sessions can be with me alone or together with my husband, Rev. Ryan W. Richards, also a Human Development Educator and Spiritual Care Provider. We help couples and families navigate communication challenges, resolve conflicts, and address inherited patterns that may be creating tension. Our goal is to guide you toward deeper understanding, stronger connection, and a more harmonious home environment.

Can you help with workplace conflict or team communication?

Absolutely. I provide organizational consulting and group sessions for businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations. These sessions are designed to improve communication, strengthen collaboration, and address conflicts that may be disrupting the workplace. We focus on developing emotional intelligence, building mutual trust, and creating a healthier work culture. Sessions are available in person in Maine or virtually, making them accessible to organizations anywhere.

Do you work with clients outside of Maine?

Yes. While I meet with clients in person in Portland, Maine, I also work with people all over the world through secure online video calls or phone sessions. This allows you to access spiritual care, conflict-resolution guidance, and contemplative education wherever you are, without needing to travel.
